Tips, New Projects & Variations

1. Colour Wing shapes.

Use over head projection markers to apply colour directly onto the wing pattern shape. Sketch a wing design onto a piece of paper then trace and transfer the design onto the wings. Apply colour to one side only.

2. When creating your fairy keep the size and proportion of the head shape as small as possible. This gives the model a more life like appearance.

When placing a 1-cm in diameter flesh coloured pompom into another handmade head/hair pompom as a face unit, keep the size of the outer handmade head shape as small as possible. This may require a close trimming away of the thread material to almost reveal the central string. Be careful not to break this thread or the handmade pompom will unravel. Once the desired pompom shape is established weave bobbles through head piece and cover the delicate central string area. This will serve to strenghten and disguise the appearance of the central thread.

Add long strands of thread into the centre of the pompom core. Braid them together to create a hair plait. Wind and twist to create a hair bun. Sew into the surface of the pompom with sewing thread and needle ot secure its position.

2. Protect your little friends from dust and dirty hands.

To preserve the fabric surface of the Fairies & Friends always was your hands before handling the fabric. Use plastic re-cycled food containers to store your creations when not in use. Make sure the contents are completely removed from the containers by washing with soap and water. Dishwasher powder can leave a residue that can stick to the fabric surface of your characters, please rinse the containers well after removing from the machune.

Look for Canisters ( like U.S.- "Crystal Light drink powder" - use the 8 quart size) that have these following features:

Sturdy - with a lid that stays put, water resistant, and are an appropriate dimension for character proportions. Opaque, Transparent, cylindrical canisters are ideal. The wool fabric and chenille stems in time will absorb some dirt and dust, food and oil from your hands so take care to cover them up when you are not playing with them.

Fairies can be stored in all types of containers to keep dust, lint and fluff away from their delicate surface. Re-cyle an plastic yogurt or butter containers or a glass jar, the type of container found in a grocery shop.

Try re-cycled plastic bags in bright colours such as bright spring green or yellow as padding for the bottom of the container. You can scrunch and shred the plastic into a hay consistency. There are many other alternatives like using remnants of material, but don't use use cotton wool or wood shavings, the fibres will stick to the surface of the wool and pipecleaners. If your creature picks up a little anyway, try using a piece of sticky tape and placing the sticky side against the e surface to pull the lint away.

Make felt cushions for the container. Use the bottom outline shape of the container as a pattern cutter, just add 0.5mm to outside edge for a seam. Remember to store your characters in some type of protective covering, even a new clean plastic sandwich bag will work perfectly to keep them clean.
